Schon wieder ist geehrte Herrn, Ein Jahr für Sie und mich vorbey
UNRECORDED BROADSIDE 'NEW YEAR's WISH' CELEBRATING THE 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REFORMATION. Folio broadside [34.5 x 22 cm]. Entirely engraved, comprising central poem within decorative and figurative borders. Edges frayed and soiled, a few small areas of loss; with a few areas strengthened on verso with old paper. A good survival withal. Unrecorded, engraved ‘New Year’s Wish’ celebrating the 300th year of Luther’s Reformation. Such ephemeral items were presumably privately printed and exchanged between a small circle of correspondents; their survival rate is necessarily low, and the present example is entirely untraced. In the upper panel, we see a central portrait of Martin Luther, flanked on the left by an open book and on the right by a chalice for administering the Sacrament (a practice particularly dear to Luther’s heart). The lower left corner perhaps depicts Luther’s 1,000-mile trek to Rome, and on the right we see Luther presenting his 95 Theses to another figure – possibly Frederick the Wise? In the meantime, the text verses celebrate the anniversary of the Reformation and express hope for the year ahead.
