[ca. 1900?]
US$ 800.00
Large 8vo (212 x 142 mm). (1), 2-128 pp. Stapled in illustrated wrappers (rear wrapper lacking) featuring 'The Coster Coon, or the White-Eyed Kaftir'; full-page steel cut of the same on p. 1 as well as a banjo-player on p. 33. Spine wrapper chipped with loss; some dog-earing, a few marginal closed tears, some light staining throughout, but a good survival withal. Unrecorded songbook brought out by the musical publisher R. March & Co of London, featuring some 250 minstrel songs as sung by named, contemporary performers. The cover illustrates George H. Chirgwin (1854-1922), a popular black-face performer known for his distinctive 'white diamond' make-up over one eye; a portrait presumably of the same is found on p. (1). The work can be attributed to ca. 1900 based on the known dates of the songs featured in it - eg "The Monte Carlo Boys" (1893); "Hello! Ma Baby" (1899); etc. - as well as the performers named - eg. Tom Birchmore (who ceased to perform in 1900). - Of note are the frequent advertisements for other similar works by March (not one of which we were able to locate in COPAC) as well as hair products, parlor games, and so on. Page 25 features an advertisement for 'Nigger Bones' ("Complete set of four, Black or White") - a basic instrument made of two rib bones often incorporated into minstrel routines. Neither OCLC nor COPAC shows any record of this title.
